What a fantastic get-a-way. This cabin has all you need to kick start your creative juices flowing! Kalien is going to provide a much needed respite for creatives looking to recharge their energies and creative minds. One can hide, hike, pray, read, create….all in the solitude of the beautiful TN foothills. I highly encourage those in need of refreshment to take time to visit this special place.

Kalien is magical. The surroundings, enhanced by the gracious and generous hearts of the founders, breathed life into my soul even as I drove down the single lane road as I arrived. I was greeted by a hawk soaring overhead, three deer, and beautiful mountains on both sides. Peace, beauty and grace are all around. The hosts, Randy and Gina Elrod, match the surroundings with their grace, generosity, beauty, and kindness. If you’re looking for a ridiculously affordable place to just get away, rest, recharge, or even have a romantic getaway, Kalien is the place. The Keefer-Roberts cabin was very comfortable-all the amenities of a top notch hotel and what’s more, you get a picturesque view from every window! I highly recommend Kalien.

There is a song that begins with the line – “there is a quiet place, far from the rapid pace.” And that has been my experience at Kalien! It offers a quiet place, a place to be still, to listen to one’s own heart, as well as that of nature in the most beautiful of surroundings. Accommodations are first class and the conversations with Randy and Gina Elrod were all about encouragement, healing and restoration of one’s soul from the rapid pace of the culture we live in. I highly recommend Kalien on so many levels. The culinary experience with Randy was well – indescribably a 10-plus, the hiking trails were stunning, and the sunrise and sunsets were on full display on the deck of the cabin for hours of amazement and joy. Whether it’s solitude, recreation, creative think time, or just a quick getaway, Kalien is a prize to be won by those who will seek and take advantage of its beauty.

Kalien is a true retreat from the mundane into the magical! I have not found a more perfect blending of solitude, safety and luxury. The Keefer-Roberts Cottage has the comfort of a 5-star hotel, without the distractions. The picturesque setting and surroundings are like from a Tolkien novel, and the bed & linens were simply outstanding!! I cannot wait to return – it truly has my highest recommendation!

The KR Cottage was absolutely incredible. Falling asleep with the sounds of the forest and waking up to the sunrise peeking over the mountains is indescribable. The night I spent there was so relaxing and honestly felt so luxurious I could barely believe it was real. KR is a great place for artists to go to rest and rejuvenate their souls!

My wife and I spent three nights in the Keefer-Roberts cottage. We left behind the worries of our chaotic life in Houston, and relished in the tranquility and peace that is offered at Kalien. We were greeted with a toast by the owners, Randy and Gina Elrod, upon our arrival.

The cottage itself is exquisite, the perfect blend of earthy and sophisticated. From rainfall shower head to Egyptian cotton sheets, no expense was spared to guarantee our comfort. We enjoyed morning coffee and breakfast from the convenience of the cottage, and spent one morning hiking the many trails around the property. During our stay, we were able to observe wildlife in their natural environment, including deer, foxes, and chipmunks.

The retreat, Kalien, is located within driving distance of gas stations, restaurants, and grocery stores. Burgess Falls State Park and the Caney Fork River is also within close proximity to the center. We would highly recommend these outings to any guest!

The piece de resistance for us was the gourmet dinner with wine pairings hosted in Randy and Gina’s home. Each course was freshly prepared, with careful consideration given to my wife’s dietary restrictions. We were welcomed into easy conversation as old friends around their table, sharing stories of joys and struggles that come with life.

Our time at Kalien was peace-filled, restorative, and life-giving. We will definitely return soon.

My “rainy Monday” spent at Kalien was the kind of quiet day away from the noise that I was looking for. Even though I couldn’t get out and walk much, simply listening to the quiet rhythm of the rain falling on the tin roof was just the atmosphere I needed.
I wish I had planned another day. 🙂
Thanks so much Randy and Gina
    I love you dearly

From the moment we pulled off the highway onto the country road leading to Kalien, we exhaled. A tough year filled with cancer, death and a pending surgery for my husband, we needed a weekend away. A weekend to rest, dream and pray. Kalien provided that. From the personal attention to details that you put into our stay knowing what we were coming to receive, to the amazing food, to the fellowship and comradery. Randy and Gina, thank you for a wonderful weekend. We can’t wait to have you in Virginia visiting our Sanctuary so we can return the favor!

I went to Kalien with some expectations. First, I was excited to meet an incredibly influential man in my husband’s life I had heard much about. Second, I longed for some rest. True, guilt-free rest from the chaos and daily work that is life. Third, I was purposefully escaping a holiday weekend and hoping to find comfort and joy in celebrating our second anniversary rather than dwelling on the internal complexity of Mother’s Day.

What I found in Kalien was far beyond what I hoped and prayed.

I connected. This man and gracious host I was looking forward to meeting has an energy and spirit unlike anyone I think I’ve ever met. His passion for this place and all the ways it can redeem and restore its visitors is inspiring. His and Gina’s hard work and dedication to this land and its beauty is empowering.

I rested. I unplugged and focused on my husband. He spent some time writing (working on his third book), and I had brought a book to read but never touched it. I let myself sit in the stillness and admittedly napped in the middle of the day. We hiked the private trails and walked the meadows and drove into town, but even in the movement, I felt calm and present. My mind wasn’t thinking of my ever changing To Do list at home and was free to enjoy the beauty and life around me.

I reflected. I am learning we will always have internal struggles to wrestle with. There is beauty in the process of knowing ourselves – and someday maybe even understanding our own insecurities and desires. Randy’s time with us at his spiritual medicine wheel was enlightening and encouraged me to allow myself the space to listen to my heart over my head. To accept the longing for true motherhood while also feeling completely whole in my marriage and as a stepmom.

To say our time here was peaceful or fun is too simple. It was powerful. And I am so grateful.
